German movie ratings...

Just like in the States, movies shown in German are given a rating indicating their appropriateness for different age groups. Here's a link to the list of ratings and their abbreviations provided by Kinopolis in Viernheim. By the way, my youngest daughter was turned away from a movie (The Simpsons) at Cinemaxx in Mannheim, so it seems Germans take this system seriously at least some of the time in some places.

Here's a list of the ratings and their translations:

o.A.: "ohne Alter" or "no age". Equivalent of "G" in the States - all welcome
ab 6 Jahre: at least 6 years old
ab 12 Jahre: at least 12 (I believe kids 6 and above may see it accompanied by an adult)
ab 16 Jahre: at least 16
k.J. - "keine Jugendfreigabe": No kids?! Not sure at what age one stops technically being a kid {UPDATE! Benny kindly informed me that 18 is the age of movie majority in Germany}
o.P. - "ohne Prüfung": This translates to "without examination". Anyone want to throw me a bone on what specifically this means? {UPDATE! Kato has the following to say about o.P.: "I'm actually pretty sure that they're not allowed to show any "o.P." movies. Or, if they do, they could only admit adults."}

A couple of links and some grousing...

First, the grousing. I know my German isn't what it should be, but is it just me who finds most German commerce sites absolutely horrible? Do Germans treat them as a riddle or game, getting some weird satisfaction by somehow extracting information from them? Ok. I'm done ranting.

Now on to some potentially relevant links...

We go to Mannheim often when we want to see movies. Here's Cinemaxx Mannheim's page listing movies they're showing in English.

I also stumbled across this site today, Kinopolis Kids Club. It might be a theater but, as usual, it's hard to tell. It seems lik the site is organized by the folks who used to make Mentos commercials (odd and somehow useless).
{Jan. 6. This just in: B tells me that Kinopolis is the theater near the mall in Viernheim. I'll create a "living post" of places that show movies in English}

Community...

Hi All. Today my wife and I were looking for English movies in the Heidelberg area without much success. A woman at work who periodically sends lists of such movies to English speakers inspired me to start a blog that does roughly the same thing. She seems to be on vacation so we find ourselves out of luck!

I'd like to make this blog a clearinghouse for information on movies in English and am hoping that folks in the Heidelberg area will contribute. I consider any city/movie theater within 30 minutes or so of Heidelberg to be in the "Heidelberg area".

Now off to find some relevant sites...
